How to Deal with Post-Election Stress

Updated: Nov 28

Elections are a significant part of our democratic process. They can also be emotionally draining. Whether the results align with your preferences or not, post-election stress can impact your mental health, relationships and daily life.  At the Counseling Center of South Jersey, we understand how challenging these periods can be. Here are some tips to help you manage through this difficult time and to support your well-being:

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings

It’s normal to feel a range of emotions after an election, including relief, disappointment, anger and / or confusion. Allow yourself to process your emotions without judgment. Suppressing these feelings can intensify stress.

2. Limit Media Consumption

The 24/7 news cycle and social media discussions can feel overwhelming. Set boundaries around your media consumption to avoid constant exposure to divisive or upsetting content. Consider designating specific times for news updates rather than checking throughout the day. Also consider a 5 day social media break.

3. Focus on What You Can Control

Elections can highlight issues that feel outside your control. Instead of dwelling on what you cannot change, focus on actionable steps that align with your values. Volunteering, advocacy or engaging with your local community are great ways to take a stand.

4. Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Stress can manifest physically and mentally. Mindfulness practices such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help ground you. Even short moments of mindfulness can create space for calm during turbulent times.

5. Connect with Supportive People

Surround yourself with friends, family and / or groups who provide a sense of support and understanding. Engaging in constructive conversations with others who share your values or listening to different perspectives in a safe space can help reduce feelings of isolation.

6. Engage in Self-Care

Stress can drain your energy,  making self-care essential. Make sure that you are getting enough sleep, eating nourishing meals and staying active.  Activities you enjoy—like reading, cooking or walking in nature—can also provide much-needed respite.

7. Consider Professional Support

If post-election stress significantly impacts your mental health, relationships, or ability to function, seeking professional counseling services can make a difference. Therapists at the Counseling Center of South Jersey can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and develop coping strategies.

8. Focus on Gratitude

Reflecting on what you are grateful for can shift your perspective. Start a gratitude journal or share positive moments with loved ones.
